Khung Leong Chan's Post about Superman

DC Comics

The most enduring American hero of the last century is someone who lived half his life in disguise and the other half as the world's most recognizable man. He is not Jack Kennedy or Joltin' Joe DiMaggio, Batman or Jerry Seinfeld, although all of them were inspired by him. It was on his muscle-bound back that the iconic comic book took flight and that the very idea of the superhero was born. He appeared on more radio broadcasts than Ellery Queen and in more movies than Marlon Brando, who once pretended to be his father. He helped give America the backbone to wage war against Adolph Hitler, the Great Depression, and the Ku Klux Klan. He remains an intimate to kids from Boston to Belgrade and has adult devotees who, like Talmudic scholars, parse his every utterance. And he has done it all with an innocence and confidence that let him appear publicly with underpants over full-body tights and assume an alter ego who kept pursuing the prettiest girl in town even though he seldom got her.
The most enduring American hero is an alien from outer space who, once he reached Earth, traded in his foreign-sounding name Kal-El for a singularly American handle: Superman.
So what is it about Superman, I wondered, that has let him not just survive but thrive for seventy-four years and counting?
It starts with the intrinsic simplicity of his story. Little Orphan Annie and Oliver Twist remind us how compelling a foundling's tale can be, and Superman, the sole survivor of a doomed planet, is a super-foundling. The love triangle connecting Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Superman has a side for everyone, whether you are the boy who can't get the girl, the girl pursued by the wrong boy, or the conflicted hero. He was not just any hero, but one with the very powers we would have: the strength to lift boulders and planets, the speed to outrun a locomotive or a bullet, and, coolest on anyone's fantasy list, the gift of flight.
Superpowers are just half the equation. More essential is knowing what to do with them, and nobody has a more instinctual sense than Superman of right and wrong. Like John Wayne, he sweeps in to solve our problems. No thank-you needed. Like Jesus Christ, he descended from the heavens to help us discover our humanity. The more jaded the era, the more we have been suckered back to his clunky familiarity. So what if the upshot of his adventures is as predictable as with Sherlock Holmes: the good guy never loses. That is reassuring.
That does not mean he hasn't changed with the times. Superman has evolved more than the fruit fly. In the 1930s he was just the crime fighter we needed to take on Al Capone and the robber barons. In the forties he defended the home front while brave GIs battled overseas. In the Cold War he stood up taller than ever for his adopted country. For each era he zeroed in on the threats that scared us most, using powers that grew or diminished depending on the need. So did his spectacles, hair style, even his job title. Each generation got the Superman it needed and deserved. Each change offered a Rorschach test of the pulse of that time and its dreams.
All that has gotten me thinking about how Superman compares to other heroes of our age and earlier ones. I admit to being biased, but here is my take on the World's Mightiest Hero and other claimants to that title:

International Driving Permit (IDP)

Now you have a valid driving license issued at your own country. That means, by law, you are permitted to drive at the country where the driving license is issued.

Now what if you go to oversea and suddenly you have the intention to drive and you want to have better freedom when traveling at overseas.  Normally we don't possess the driving license of that particular country. Do you know the requirement to drive in that country?

Thanks to the 'INTERNATIONAL DRIVING PERMIT', aka IDP. now you can have the permission to drive.   What is IDP by the way? With IDP, the holder may drive a motor vehicle in any country that recognises the IDP, and it must be accompanied with the valid driving license.

The driving license  issued in Malaysia is as of this sample.

Class of Driving License

After having a valid driving license, next is to proceed to the Transport/Automobile department of the particular country to apply for an IDP.

In Malaysia, you might need to goto the JPJ , which stands for Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan or Road Transport Department. Another alternative is to goto AAM, namely the Automobile Association of Malaysia.

Here is the front page of an IDP

Class of license class granted : Align to international standards,
Class A for motorcycles , and class B for car. I obtained the class B indicated in the IDP as above. :-)

The IDP is valid for use at the following countries:

The IDP is normally valid for ONE year from the date issued.

Sounds cool, right, then what are you waiting for??
Let's drive and enjoy !!!

BUT DON'T FORGET TO OBEY THE TRAFFIC RULES nhe...

Cheers !!!

My Career in Nuclear Industry as a Radiation Protection Officer

Nuclear ?? Radiation ??.... A lot of people fear of nuclear & radiation. We have a few nuclear incidents around the world. Just google around and you will find it.

But I would like to introduce to all of you an interesting career related to nuclear safety, which is the "Radiation Protection Officer". In USA, the career is known as Radiation Safety Officer.

Well, what is that means?

Well, it is a good and meaningful career. The job is to protect people's safety,by preventing deterministic effect of radiation, and minimising the stochastic effect of radiation to humankind.

In Malaysia, before becoming a "Radiation Protection Officer", one need to attend a training course from approved training provider.
After all, the next task is to pass a series of written and practical exam by the Atomic Energy Licensing Board of Malaysia (AELB). With good health condition, one can be certified as a Radiation Protection Officer , or Pegawai Perlindungan Sinaran in Malaysia.

Result statement after I passed the Radiation Protection Officer examination from the Atomic Energy Licensing Board of Malaysia.
In Malaysia, radiation protection is governed under the Atomic Energy Licensing Act 1984 (Act 204) and all the subsidiary regulations under it.

For more information, visit AELB

You may become a member of the American Nuclear Society to ensure that you are updated to the latest information related to the nuclear world and be part of the community for ideas, sharing and networking to the international world. I'm currently a professional member of the society

For more information, visit American Nuclear Society

Also, as part of the Continuous Education Program for Radiation Protection Officer (RPO) re-certification, an RPO need to attend regular training courses, conferences, seminars, and workshops related to radiation protection and nuclear.

One of the training which I attended in 2015 is World Nuclear University (WNU) short course.

For more information, visit World Nuclear University

General duties as an RPO is described in the AELB websites:
Radiation Protection Officer Duties & Responsibilities

Other information:
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

Feel free to contact me if you need more information on how to become a RPO and knowledge sharing related to the nuclear industry.

My Japanese Spelling Examination Experience, aka Kanji Kentei Shiken or Kanken ( 漢検 )

I was a Japanese Language  learner since 2002, starting by aiming for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). After passing the JLPT Level 2 in 2008, recently I found out about another challenges of brushing up the Kanji (chinese character) portion of japanese language.

For those who don't know,  Kanji Kentei Shiken or the Kanken test consist of 12 levels , and I took the Kanken level 10, 9 , 8 and recently Level 7 on 13th June 2015!

Here is my Kanken Level 7 results, which was recently released. I received it on yesterday (August 5th 2015).

Let's see what I got !

Hmm, judging from the results, it is 175 points out of the full score of 200, which translates to be around 87.5% .Not too bad , I guess. By the way, the passing mark for Level 7 is minimum 140/200 or 70%

This test is originally designed for Japanese kids , but foreigners are all welcome to take the test at some of the test locations around the world. For my case, I took the test at Singapore.

So happy !!! :-) Thumbs up ! Mission accomplished.

Preparations for the test

Hmm, that's one of the favorite questions about how to pass the test. The Kanji Kentei Shiken tests the Kanji memorization, in fact the more you see and write it, the better score you will get.
In fact, this is the first test I took after I visited Japan in the month of March 2015.

Practice makes perfect ! Good luck to all of you !

If you are asking about available books to prepare, I would recommend  some of these Kanji Kentei (Kanken Books Series) as listed below. You may find all these related books at Amazon.com or major Japanese bookstores like Kinokuniya.
